Know your collagen before you use it.

The magical ingredient collagen, oh how the beauty and youth obsessed love it, including me. Do you know where collagen comes from, it’s benefits, and the best ways to use it? Keep on reading and you will! Collagen can be found in a multitude of places in our bodies. Where the collagen is stored will depend on if it is type 1, 2 or 3. Type 1 comes from skin, organs, tendons, and bones, whereas type2 comes from cartilage.  Yes, collagen comes from animals, it is not plant based. If you are vegan, or vegetarian stick to using hyaluronic acid to keep a youthful appearance. There are two types of collagens on the market these days, and they are bovine(cow), and marine(fish) Bovine collagen is best suited for increasing bone, joint, and gut health. Marine collagen is what should be taken to hydrate the skin and improve the appearance of skin, hair, and nails.

Bovine Collagen Type1

Bovine collagen is labelled type 1 and type 3 and its source comes from the cows hide. Make sure that when you buy collagen that is bovine, you look to see if it grass-fed or not. Grass-fed means the collagen was produced humanely while non grass-fed cattle is produced inhumanely. I personally take type 1 collagen because of my osteopenia because it provides the best bone health benefits. I might add in marine collagen to my diet at some point but right now I am happy with how my skin is aging.

Marine Collagen Type2

Marine collagen is your type 2 collagen, and it’s obviously sourced from fish. If right now you are thinking hmmm, I do enjoy a fish meal often…. Guess I already take in type 2.  I’m sorry to burst your bubble but unless you are eating the bones and scales of the fish you aren’t getting those collagen benefits. You are however getting in Omega3s which is also healthy for our bodies including the skin. What was once thrown in the garbage, is now being broken down and hydrolyzed and sold as the elixir of youth Unfortunately type 2 collagen is your more expensive collagen and is your beauty collagen. Go figure its more expensive… as if it is touting beauty benefits isn’t the reason for its increase in price. I digress though.
